The Client
Alfa Laval is a global industrial leader in heat transfer, separation, and fluid handling, where fast access to accurate information is critical. As the organization grew, employees spent increasing time navigating systems instead of focusing on their core work. Their mission was to create an in-house AI agentic platform that would help employees work faster, safer, and smarter.
That platform became ALVA, a secure, in-house AI platform providing a single, trusted entry point to AI, connecting employees to the full business ecosystem while removing concerns around licensing, privacy, and governance.
The Challenge
The challenge was not only Alfa Laval’s complex information landscape but also the lack of added value and high costs that came with generic AI tools.
-
Scattered knowledge across systems, tools, and teams.
-
Time lost searching for information instead of creating value.
-
Generic AI tools that were costly, hard to govern and delivered limited real-world impact.
-
Strict enterprise requirements around security, data governance and compliance were needed.
-
An extreme timeline: deliver a secure, enterprise-wide AI platform globally in just 10 weeks.
These were real business needs with real deadlines and no room for compromise.
The Solution
Together with the Trident partnership, Reeinvent, System Verification and CodeScene, Alfa Laval built Alva. This secure, in-house AI platform serving as a single conversational interface across the organization. Alva connects employees to trusted data and domain-specific agents for real-world tasks, combining flexible AI models with strong governance and a cost-efficient architecture to deliver scalable, long-term value.
-
Reeinvent led the product and platform development: mapping information flows, shaping the conversational experience and building the components that let Alva pull data from multiple systems into one trusted answer.
-
System Verification brought deep QA and testing expertise, ensuring Alva is stable, reliable, and trustworthy for critical decisions, while also validating the products Alva monitors.
-
CodeScene established a high-quality baseline from day one by integrating CodeHealth™ metrics and quality gates into pull requests. It helped the team spot hotspots early, prevent technical debt before it became an issue, and ensure only healthy code reached production. This created a sustainable foundation for Alva as it scaled.
Effects of reduced unplanned work go beyond numbers
SmartCraft could reduce unplanned work and allocate more time to make improvements on the platform itself, introduce new technologies and experiment wirameworks. The effects of unplanned work being reduced go beyond numbers. It has had a very positive effect on the whole organization and especially on the mindset, motivation and the well being of SmartCraft's developers.
